DICED Pilot is a 2D action game in which you control the 'DICED dimension ship' and manoeuvre it through a variety of dimension levels. (DICED stands for Dimension Injected Cockpit Embedding Device). The goal is to reach the exit point of each level while collecting as many gems as possible. A wide variety of levels are intermingled with short training levels to introduce new concepts and abilities such as magnet-like manoeuvring, new weapon and jetpack types, shield and various other power ups. New level packs and game modes (such as time challenge, boomerang mode and chaos factor) can be unlocked by earning achievements.
The idea behind DICED Pilot was conceived a couple of years ago when Yoa discovered the LibGDX game framework while working on a computer game for a Norwegian client. He wanted to use the LibGDX framework to create a simple game for Android devices after he’d just purchased his first smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy 2. Yoa states: “At that time my free time was rather limited, so I thought: why not have my kids design game levels for me while I can concentrate on the coding and graphics? I began working on a level editor that was integrated into the game and accessible and usable on modern touch devices. The first versions of the game were based on Turret, a game created by my eldest son Noah. I wrote some code to import levels he had created with Game Maker just to have some levels to test and start with, this was midst 2012. Eventually this led to a game framework architecture in which I could describe levels using a simple text format (JSON). The next step was to be able to save my edited levels to a server (in the cloud as they say nowadays) so I could design or adjust levels on my phone while on the train to work and save them to my webserver. Late 2014 my son showed me another new game idea he had created using Game Maker and I decided to incorporate some of those ideas into the new game. The block shaped player from his demo game would eventually transform into the dice-shaped dimension ship. The visual scaling effect he used became the basis for the variety of visual effects you can now choose from within the editor. During the last years I had the opportunity to invest more time into the development of DICED Pilot until it came at a stage in which I could show it to people, so I created the websites yoagames.com and dicedpilot.com. A private beta version is currently available at request for people who want to playtest.”
